Community - Aptos Dentist

Until there’s a cure, Jacob’s Heart is here.
Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services provides family-centered care that addresses the emotional, practical and financial struggles for families of children and teens during treatment, families experiencing anticipatory grief, and those who are bereaved.
Our service area includes Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, and South Santa Clara Counties in California.

Dr. Allyson Drew coordinated a unique dental mission trip to Peru to study and treat tooth decay in rural communities. She organized 40 dental volunteers to work with Rotary International and the University of Cuzco to provide dental care to 600 Quechuan’s who previously had no access to care. After leading multiple missions, and establishing a lasting tradition of cooperation between San Francisco and Cuzco Universities, she received a Rotary International Service Award.
VETERANS CARE PACKAGES
Drs. Allyson and Jason Drew support our troops abroad and good health for local children by hosting a Halloween Candy Buy Back. For every pound of candy children bring to their office the week following Halloween, the doctors give them $1 cash then ask them and their patients to write cards and letters to the troops. On Veterans Day, packages of the candy and cards are shipped to the troops. “Helping to sweeten a soldier’s day is a nice treat,” says Dr. Allyson, “and when the candy is accompanied by a handwritten card from an appreciative 7-year-old, they know their efforts are remembered and appreciated back home.” For more information about this annual event hosted by the doctors November 1-7, call Drew Dental at (831) 688-6060 or email info@drewdental.com. You can check out the program online at: http://www.halloweencandybuyback.com/about.html, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuLhmdJ7bmk.

WALNUT AVENUE FAMILY & WOMEN’S CENTER
At Drew Dental we set an annual service goal to give back to our community. We’ve committed our 2018 goal to donate to the Walnut Avenue Family & Women’s Center. For more than 80 years the Walnut Avenue Family & Women’s Center has helped women, children, and families lead healthy, happy and productive lives, and offers services for youth and victims of domestic violence.

SANTA CRUZ MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY
Drew Dental is a proud sponsor of The Museum of Discovery, a place of discovery, enrichment, and education for children that showcases the wonders of our local environment, from the ocean to the forests, agriculture to entrepreneurship, and scholarship to tourism.

DIENTES COMMUNITY DENTAL CARE
Since 2010, Dr. Allyson volunteers her professional services at Dientes Community Dental Clinic, located here in Santa Cruz County. She loves the opportunity to use her dental skills to make a difference in the lives of the medically underserved, especially the children. Dientes began in 1992 by a few local private dentists who wanted to provide care for HIV-infected patients with no other place to go. Today, Dientes operates at full capacity providing over 22,000 visits annually. Find out more about Dientes here: http://dientes.org

APTOS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Active members of the Aptos Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Allyson and Dr. Jason proudly support Chamber activities throughout the year. One of their favorite events is the ‘Hats Off to Fashion Show’, which they help sponsor and volunteer as models. Proceeds from Hats Off benefit the Katz Cancer Resource Center of Dominican Hospital and Omega-Nu, a non-profit organization in Watsonville that supports women and children by funding abuse prevention programs, education and scholarships. ”The show features local businesses and makes clear there are great fashion choices here in the Aptos area and Santa Cruz County”, says Dr. Allyson.

SUNSHINE VILLA ASSISTED LIVING AND MEMORY CARE
Most recently, Dr. Allyson reached out to the Sunshine Villa Assisted Living and Memory Care Retirement Home in Santa Cruz. She and her son, Hunter, entertained residents with songs and dancing. Dr. Allyson is grateful to share with her son, through actions, the gift of giving back!

CDA CARES
CDA Cares is another important program that Dr. Allyson and Dr. Jason support. CDA Cares enables volunteer dentists, dental professionals and community volunteers, to provide dental services, at no charge, to more than 2,000 patients at each event.
In addition CDA Cares educates the public and policymakers about the importance of good oral health and the need for an adequately funded dental safety net. Their efforts are making an impact. Adult Denti-Cal benefits, eliminated by the state in 2009, were partially restored in 2014; However, the program remains chronically underfunded and leaves many, including the working poor, without access to care. Dr. Jason and Dr. Allyson actively participate in closing this gap and making dental care accessible to all. DREW DENTAL ~A FAMILY TRADITION OF GIVING BACK
Dr. Allyson and Dr. Jason carry forward a commitment to community service modeled by their parents. Dr. Allyson’s mother founded the annual fundraiser for the Stanislaus County Medical Alliance in her hometown of Modesto. Dr. Jason’s father finds funding and volunteers to provide fire clearance in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where his mom also volunteers as the community’s emergency response coordinator. Just as we are encouraged by our families to pay it forward, we encourage others to reach out as well.
Dr. Allyson began volunteering in Modesto at Evergreen Convalescent Home and became a life skills coach for the First Tee Golf Program. In college, she reached out globally, providing healthcare screenings for children in Oaxaca, Mexico for which she received a Child and Family Health International Humanitarian Award.
Dr. Jason’s volunteerism began in high school, where he volunteered at O’Connor and Good Samaritan Hospitals. He then worked with disadvantaged elementary schools to educate children on proper oral hygiene and healthy diets while in dental school.
Dr. Allyson and Dr. Jason’s newest community service goal is to implement an Oral Hygiene Care Day in local elementary schools. Our hope is to bring Healthy Smiles to a school near you.
Whether sailing and surfing in the Pacific Ocean, hiking and biking in the Santa Cruz Mountains, or golfing and frolfing at local courses, Dr. Allyson and Dr. Jason love living and raising a family in this beautiful community. To preserve Santa Cruz County’s natural treasures, they support California State Parks, the National Park Service, Save Our Shores, and Surfrider Foundation. In addition Drew Dental employs environmentally safe practices for which we received the Green Business Certification.
